Inside view
Adam Fovent
Bachelor of Advanced Science 2011
Juris Doctor 2016
Adam Fovent is the rst in his family to undertake
tertiary education.
“I am honoured and humbled to have been awarded
the Justice Peter Hely Scholarship, which will help me
to undertake the Master of Laws (LLM) at Harvard
Law School,” Adam says.
“Studying at Harvard is sure to be a life‑changing
experience for me, both personally and professionally,
and simply would not be possible without the support
of others. This opportunity is truly a testament to the
generosity and contributions of others.
His postgraduate study at Harvard will focus on
nancial regulation, securities regulation and
investment management law, with particular
attention on the role of commercial law and capital
markets in fostering societal good.
The successes I have already enjoyed, both
academically and professionally, owe much to the
rigorous and demanding academic environment of
the Juris Doctor program at Sydney and the strength
of the law school’s teaching faculty, particularly in
the elds of equity and commercial law,” Adam adds.
Highlights of his legal studies and achievements
after graduation include being awarded the Edmund
Barton Medal, which encompasses all University
of Sydney coursework students, and completing a
placement at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre
(as part of the External Placement Program).
He also served as a student representative on the
Universitys Disability Action Plan Consultative
Committee.
He has conducted fundraising campaigns for
non‑government organisations (NGOs) in Cambodia,
and volunteered at an orphanage for children living
with HIV, and with a grassroots NGO combating the
causes of human tracking.
“My fundamental desire is to pursue a career
characterised by the centrality of service,” he says.

In April 2017 our Jessup Team was named the
world champion at the prestigious White and
Case Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot
Competition in Washington DC.
The competition began in the US in 1960, and has
grown to become the world’s largest moot court
contest, with participants from more than 550 law
schools in more than 87 countries.
The achievement by Alyssa Glass (Juris Doctor),
Will Khun (Arts/Law), Joel Phillips (Juris Doctor),
Eric Shi (Arts/Law) and Harry Stratton (Science/
Law) now means the University of Sydney has won
the coveted Jessup Cup a record five times, a feat
unmatched by any other law school worldwide.
“This is a remarkable and significant achievement,
said the Dean, Professor Joellen Riley.
“Their victory not only reflects their outstanding
talents as mooters, but the exemplary work
and dedication of their wonderful coach, Angus
Nicholas (Arts/Law) and their academic mentor,
Dr Alison Pert.
